What is crazy making? We hear about it; we stumble upon it; we are subjected to it; and we even do it to others. But what is it? And how do you know it when you see it?

Most often when we use the term “crazy making,” we’re referring to the conduct of someone that does just that-his or her behavior makes you crazy. You know it?s the goofy things that people do that make you “nuts.” Thus, the term “crazy making.”

Did you know there are actually three kinds of crazy making?

Innocent Crazy Making Behavior

Now sometimes this behavior can be one’s innocent human idiosyncrasies, like the way some people squeeze their toothpaste tube. It?s the personal quirks that can be crazy-making to other individuals.

Malicious Psychological Abuse

Or, it can be malicious behaviors intended to confuse you, as in the case of “gas-lighting.” That is telling you something or doing something to make you think things are different from the way you intuitively know them to be.

Abusers are very good at this malicious form of crazy making. It’s as though they enjoy casting doubt amidst your clarity. My patients and newsletter readers frequently tell me how their abusive partners tell them they are crazy at the very time in which they are most sound. Or, they tell them that situations are different from the way they see or know them to be even when they are most certain.

Cruel, Heinous Legal-Psychiatric Abuse

Now there is another form of crazy making that has the exact same intention, but far more serious consequences. If you have read my writing you know what’s coming. It?s the crazy making that is more literal.

It’s the crazy making in which I tell you, you are psychiatrically and certifiably crazy. And to substantiate my allegations, I secure the opinion of an expert crazy diagnostician: a psychologist or psychiatrist. Thus, I officially make you crazy.

Now if you are a domestic violence survivor, who is in combat with an abuser using the healthcare and legal system to discredit or silence you and your victimization, you know this crazy making strategy.

The most important thing you can do for yourself and your children is to make sure you do not step into the crazy shoes because if you do, you will be wearing the crazy hat for the rest of your life.

Helping Handicapped People Through Social Work

We all know that physically and mentally handicapped people require special care. Globally, a number of public and private institution setups take care of the special needs of handicapped people. Providing help to these people is one of the greatest social services that a person can provide. However, people who make this mission in life need to be trained in how to care for handicapped people.

Some people are born handicapped, and others get handicapped later in life. Accidents, wars, natural, and other disasters are the major causes of both physical and mental handicaps. Children, who are born handicapped or get disabilities early in life, need special care to help them adjust to their circumstances. Physical disabilities usually cause mental trauma also and psychiatrists and psychologists who are trained in helping such cases are employed to help them. People learn to live with their physical disabilities, but mental trauma is far more difficult to tackle. Some patients make amazing progress and learn to deal with and get over their mental stress. Others take a much longer period to recover, and yet, others simply give up on life and refuse to progress.

Institutions for handicapped people depend heavily on volunteers to help them in providing this social service. Moreover, a number of physiotherapists, doctors, psychologists provide their services free to help disabled people. Then there are organizations that provide free aid in terms of medication, food, and financial help to run these institutions. Helping the handicapped is far more difficult than helping regular patients in a hospital are. The joy of the staff in these institutions knows no limit when a person with disabilities becomes capable of rejoining the main stream of life.

Sadly enough, in most developing countries, the handicapped people are left to fend for themselves without any help from the state. People also tend to ignore thinking about helping these people. In fact, in all the countries of the world if you ask anyone for information regarding handicapped people, institutions and organizations working in this field, they will be unaware of this.

As human beings, with all our limbs and faculties in tack, we must make an effort to help these people. We should never forget that we ourselves could end up like them. After all, no one can avoid a disaster that’s disdained to happen. Therefore, helping people with handicaps is a duty that all of us need to perform.

Kadang-kadang orang membuat dirinya sendiri sengsara dengan memberikan perhatian terus-menerus terhadap apa yang tidak bisa disembuhkan atau tentang sesuatu yang tak dapat diprediksi. Hal ini buruk bagi kesehatan pikiran.

Kedua, kemampuan untuk menangani stres atau trauma dan bangkit kembali dari kesulitan menunjukkan kewarasan mental. Karakteristik daya tahan seperti ini dimiliki oleh mereka yang dapat menangani situasi stres dengan mudah.

Ketiga, kesehatan mental yang lebih besar merupakan hasil dari keseimbangan dalam hidup. Dalam kehidupan, kita selalu perlu menyeimbangkan sejumlah hal. Sebagai contoh, kita akan diperlakukan sebagai ‘penyendiri’ jika kita tidak bisa membuat keseimbangan antara waktu yang dihabiskan untuk sosial dan untuk sendiri. Juga kita perlu menyeimbangkan antara beberapa hal seperti bekerja dan bermain. Tidur dan terjaga, istirahat dan bergerak, waktu yang dihabiskan di dalam ruangan dan waktu yang dihabiskan di luar rumah.

Influence Of The New Moon

Sir Isaac Newton’s theory of gravity speaks that every particle attracts every other particle with a force that depends on their masses and the distance between them. The moon constantly attracts the earth behaves like a loose garment that can be pulled out from the body to fall back again. It implies that every day, when the moon is directly overhead, the water of the earth flows out towards the moon, and causes high tide. Hence, during the full moon, the attraction is greater than the normal. Dr. Lyall Watson writes in Supernature (London, 1973, p. 49) that, “Every drop of water in the ocean responds to this force, and every living marinal animal and plant is made aware of the rhythm. The lives of those that inhabit the margins of the seas depend entirely on this awareness.”

Sir J.G. Frazer has discussed the influence of the new moon and propounded that it brings fertility and causes growth in agriculture (The Golden Bough, London, 1956, p. 128). Sir Frank Browne writes in his remarks in 1964 that, “The life of the oyster has a marked rhythm that corresponds to the tidal rhythm of the waters. The fascinating thing; however was that the behaviour of all the oysters had altered in exactly the same way, and they were still keeping time with each other. The oysters had adopted a new rhythm and now opened up at the time of tide. This is the first piece of scientific evidence to show that even an organism living away from the ocean tides could be influenced by the coming out of new moon” (Living Organism, London, 1969, p. 12).

The small silver fish, known as Grunion survives on its response to the lunar cycle. Shortly after the new moon from March to August, the Grunion appears on the surface on the shores of California. The Grunion leave their eggs buried in the wet sand undisturbed for two weeks, because the waves of water will not come until new moon. When the spring tide occurs, the larvae have completely developed and they break out of the eggs and swim away through the surf. The ability of the Grunion to reproduce is thus controlled by the new moon.

Land animals are also influenced by the new moon. The May flies may live only for a few hours, during which time they have to find another fly mate and lay their eggs in water. To accomplish this, it is necessary that all the flies emerge together at around the same time. Lake Victoria, the source of Nile river has a successful species of May fly, called Provilla Adusta. These insects use the new moon as a signal for the time to emerge, and thus ensure the survival of their species (The Sea Around Us, London, 1979, p. 15 by Rachel Carson).

The human birth times are closely linked to the lunar cycle. The two doctors collected information on more than half a million birth that occurred in New York hospital between 1948 and 1957. This instance showed a clear report of normal delivery chiefly during the new moon (Lunar Periodicity in Human Reproduction, New York, 1959)

There is a close connection between the new moon and the bleeding in general. The scientists have discovered that the new moon controls the flow of blood in the same way that it controls the tides. Edson Andrew reports that in a survey of over a thousand bleeders, the patients needing unusual means of hemostats (of preventing bleeding) on the operating table. Almost 82% of all the bleeding crisis occurred between the first and the last quarters of the moon. It means that a minimum of crisis (only 18%) occurred in that half of the lunar month centered around the new moon. Dr. Andrew comments, “These data have been so conclusive and convincing to me that I threaten to become a witch-doctor and operate on dark night only, saving the moonlight nights for romance.” When it is moonlight, it is not new moon as during new moon, there is no light (Cycle in your Life, London, 1976 by Dr. Duff)

Leonard Ravitz had discovered a direct physiological link between man and the moon. He found that all people show a cyclic pattern between the head and a chest reading, which is in accordance with the lunar cycle, vide Periodic Changes in Electromagnetic Fields, New York, 1960 by L.V. Ravitz.

It is well known fact that mental patients or lunatics are greatly influenced mentally by the lunar cycle. The full moon is a time of unusually high activity among the mental patients, and the staff working in mental hospitals is not generally permitted to take a day off when it is full moon, because the whole group of staff is required to be able to manage the increased activity amongst the patients. In contrast, the new moon is a time of unusual quiet among mental patients. Activity in normal hospitals is also significantly increased at the time of full moon.

Whatever the time chosen, there are two days in every month and such days are when the sun and moon come into opposition, i.e., the new moon. On such occasions, the spiritual forces are released on earth and the aspirant must take an advantage of them. Yoga Benefits Of Pranayama

Pranayam is made up of two words Prana + Ayam.

Prana is the vital force present in whole cosmos. We have been provided Prana, the supreme source of energy by the creator. Proper utilisation of this free source of energy can make remarkable changes to our physical and mental health, vitality and self confidence. Prana is more subtle than air and can be defined as the energy essence that is within everything in the universe.
Ayama means to control or to give a rhythm or a definite flow.

In this sense Pranayama may be defined as a process and technique through which vital energy can be stimulated and increased and this brings about perfect control over the flow of Prana within the body. Pranayama locks the scattering of pranic energy, consolidates it at the centre of your body-mind complex and laser-beams it to an intense awareness of the self. In simple language Pranayam can be said to be the right form of breathing technique to control our energy.

Breathing Technique: We can train ourselves to breathe more slowly and more deeply. We can reduce our breathing rate from about fifteen breaths a minute to 5-6 breaths a minute. Reduced breathing rate leads to slowing down the heart rate as more oxygen can be pumped even with less number of breaths. Time of exhalation should be longer than that of inhalation in the breath cycle.

Most of us are not well aware of tangible and intangible benefits of Pranayama. All benefits of pranayama cannot be written down, few of them are listed below:-

Healthy Heart: Heart is the key organ of our body which beats about 70 times per minute to pump blood non-stop all your life. The health of your heart indicates our life expectancy and quality of life in old age. More oxygen in the blood means more oxygen to muscles of the heart.

Better Blood Circulation: As a result of better breathing techniques, the freshly oxygenated blood travels from lungs to the heart. The heart pumps it via arteries and blood vessels to every part of the body, where in turn is absorbed by every tissue and cell. This improves the blood circulation and more oxygen energy reaches all parts of your body.

Dog and monkey have higher breathing rate and lower life in contrast with elephant and tortoise taking four to five breaths in a minute and it lives up to 200 years or more. As a person with sedentary lifestyle reaches middle age, lung tissues tend to grow less and less elastic and lung capacity decreases. Pranayama can help to reduce the effects of following old age problems.
